Newspapers!
I am amazed..simply amazed by the e-editions of Indian Newspapers..they are as sleazy as sleazy can ever be!!! Today's headlines- I repeat headlines, on the Times of India- read "Item Girl Rakhi Sawant has filed a molestation case against singer Mika for forcibly kissing her" Duh!!!! I agree we are a lascivious country-( you say we are not- dudes..look at the population :D..how did it come about??), but this has to take the cake. Unbelievable headline.
Time for some softening. Ok- I agree, they have one sleazy caption like this everyday and it is indeed not a headline but just the way they arrange their newspaper on the net; their unique identity they once called it, having a catchy photograph and a gossipy article (rolling over eyes...yeah.. whatever!!.. if that was ever an identity, then the Khajuraho Temples have the right to it- minus the captions of course!) but, can't come up with something better? They call themselves the Times of "INDIA" for heaven's sakes!!!
A friend of mine at work wanted to look at an Indian newspaper- I tried "The Hindu"- the site took a while to open and froze the net for a good few seconds- friend went "wince wince"- oh i forgot the one pop-up that made it out too. (But, The Hindu atleast gives its readers that it is a serious newspaper- it gives some views of happenings atleast-thank god for that) He said another please, this one's not too iwell organized. I was a little offended, but I said ok- let me try TOI- out came 3 terrific pop-ups and then Rakhi babe. Too good! What an impression about Indian standards. (After all the good impression they formed seeing me, that was a let-down :D)
Also the bloody buggas update it at their own free wish and will. I made some smart-ass comment about livng in Hyd to Shweta in 2002 that got published thanks to her the next day. It was out on the e-edition in 2005!! WTF??!! Ok, maybe that ain't too much of an issue because I ain't no big fry. But, it takes them forever to even update headlines. I heard about some major issue ( I shall avoid talking about that issue in this post!) a good 18 hours after it happened on the TOI website. Don't newspapers have a moral responsibility to get the news out ASAP?? Isin't that what they are for??
The sooner they realize that the e-editions are going to be big profit makers in the long run; and the best way to flash headlines and interesting events as they unravel; and hence, the addded importance of making the e-edition as eye-pleasing as possible- the better!
Also, consider the big advantage- the better their e-edition, the more readers they'll have on the net, the fewer the actual paper readers, the more their profits as the middle newspaper men are eliminated. That's what they want right! More importantly, the lesser trees that have to be cut. A little too far-fetched you might say, but food for thought- right!! :)
While we are on the topic of newspapers, loads of people from AP will confess to reading and even loving another shady newspaper called Deccan Chronicle- apna DC :). It had the highest circulation ( or thereabouts!)- and is the shabbiest newspaper ever! The Editorial once ended in the middle of a sentence- a middle of a paragraph- and to top it all, no apologies the next day either!! I loved all the gossip it came with though. I feel these bloody newspapers must stop pretending to serve as newspapers and move over to the sleaze world. We want that, don't we? :) The more the sleaze magazines the better!
All this because I am angry about no newspaper covering a superhuman effort by an Indian student in Duke (its Dooke) University. He ran the 100 metres in 10.06 seconds- shattering the Indian record in the process. He is young, and recovering from illness and can only get better. On being quizzed whether he wanted to run in the Olympics- he said, well in a couple of year's time I can probably make it to the American team- but I won't because I am an Indian-period. And I won't run for India, because no one supports me, finances me, no one even wants to publish my achievements in the newspapers. Damn sad!
Anil- we are there for you mah man!! Keep running :)
Ok- the last paragraph was BS, but I am sure many such people and missions are overlooked in the overzealousness support of sleaze by the media. Time to think and arrange the papers better please. Or people like me, "the over-dependent on the net one's" will stop following Indian happenings altogether. And believe me, there are more and more people like me... Anyone from the media listening??

Just the way a majority of people hate reading books off their monitors, so do people hate reading newpapers off their monitors.
I heard about some major issue ( I shall avoid talking about that issue in this post!) a good 18 hours after it happened on the TOI website
Sorry for being me, but can also mean that the issue happened on the site, and you heard about it 18 hours later. Well, that is one of the possible misconstruals, no offence, AH! I'm sure that's NOT what you wanted to say.
The site put up a major news story 18 hours after it occurred. That's what you're trying to say, right?
And no, I ain't being a smart ass, alright? Can't help it. That's how the tester's mind works :D
Good post. But I hear that even The Washington Post and The NY Times and all the biggies still bring out newspapers with TONS of supplements for readers... and I'm not too sure how many people actually read newspapers online... but that doesn't mean the newspapers shouldn't update their sites, and I'm with you on that! The same goes for most of the sites maintained by the various state governments (and perhaps even the central government) in India.
...also, I too saw that article about the woman allegedly being molested by the singer. In the paper edition of the newspaper (:p) this news appeared in the lower half of the front page... but then it's not like it deserved to be in the front page at all!
As for the pop-ups... I have no idea. IE and Firefox block out most of them... even then, how would I know, for I have never bothered to visit ToI on the web :P
DC is sleazy, true. ToI is also on the verge of becoming a sleazebag. But let's face it... there's no other way they can sell more copies!
Also... if u eliminate the 'middlemen', those people who distribute newspapers... don't you think it's BAD? As it is, more and more people are unemployed... People go to any lengths to get a decent job...this won't help. ToI costs Re 1 on certain days, and Rs 2 on others... and Rs 4.5 on Sunday. Total cost per week comes to no more than Rs 11.50 This is WITH the middlemen. Let's not rob them of their daily wage, shall we, so that we get to pay 20 paise less for a newspaper?
Being unemployed sucks, dude.
@moosey
1)those were smart ass comments.. fat ass!! :)
2)well..loads already read the news off the net.. and the numbers only going to rise right! loads of ppl hate reading books..but flash news...u got to have it on the net dude..and its nice to be able to atleast see headlines..not some sleaze!!!
3)make supplements..no isues with that.. but make a good newspaper with sensible stuff in it-FIRST
4) most indian websites suck..sorry to say that :(
5) u are telling me that indians actually want a lot of sleaze???!!! i dont think so dude!!
6) thoughtful abt hte middlemen!! :) my bad..over that.. but thats the way the world is going..more profits for hte rich guys..and elmination of the small fish!!! :(
Just as e-books never took off and e-magazines never came to the fore, e-newspapers will always remain as condensed versions of the paper, tailored to suit the audience they cater to. Its about capturing eye balls and you would be surprised by the amount of research sites such as rediff and indiatimes/economictimes do. Click through's [number of times an article is clicked] don't lie.
Like you pointed out, its about making money and more the click through's, more the money. Its the sad truth and like it or not, its here to stay.
TOI's degeneration to tabloidism is no news. It's print version has been continually doing this over the yrs, i remember reading Clinton's exploits quoted in verbatim from that whatever-report on the front page, quite a few yrs back............ and the headlines like "Mallika Sherawat is no bimbo" (now, that was news!!!) to "Emran hashmi is naughty" ( isn't he???) ........... but isn't it the largest selling English daily in the country???? and not that it comes cheaper than other newspapers!!! Sensationalism sells. (no rocket-science there, i know!!!)
Regarding, e-newspapers, that's a valid point there, guess it's still an untapped field in India, so the slackness!! and regarding the quality of content there...well, everbody treats Indian audience/readers as morons from TOI to Bollywood movie directors!!!
am surprised u took time off the WC to write the blog :)
as an aside, has anyone ever seen Asian Age (MJ Akbar's baby)????? They treat their readers as absolut sleazemings!!!!
u gotta see it to believe it...even their front page is page3!!!
long comment for the post : verbose, we are , arn't we!!! :)
@anon- are they really condensed versions? i wonder... hmmm.. i think of them as an extended version..simply cos its easy to link articles.. u pick something..u get to read all thats happened...!! not so easy with the real paper version! and am sure u are right abt the clicks and the research behind it!! i know itll stay...but i am just pissed that its so blatantly shown that skin sells!!!
@moi..we didnt have TOI in hyd at that time :D.. and read this.. TOI is the largest selling newspaper in the WORLD!! not just India :) lol abt those headlines.. and i had to write.. fans you see.they cant live without my posts :) and shall pass AA thanks for the tip :)
I like Frontline...its one mag that has no sleaze..no ads... and its all articles...actually it does get a little boring..:D but appreciate them for what they are doing..
i dont know if frontline still exists. this is news from a few years back..am rather antiquated :)
well, a lot has been said, and no point in repeating the shit... read this much earlier, before all the comments, but then u know i was busy otherwise yesterday night... anyways, jus droppin in the obligatory line - afterall, wat post of urs is complete without a comment frm me? :P
I saw that too, I fail to understand what an Item girl is????
Yeah, but the quality of a headline news, and the newspaper in general...questionable.
Very interesting posts on the blog, Anurag. And how is the world cup viewing going? I missed the Argentina game! :( Watched all the games played yesterday, though. And I am going to watch all the
re-runs this evening.
@saik..now if only i got my other 2 obligatory comments- banthi and didi! and piss i can bully into another comment.. i am good :) hehe..
@jas- i dont know it either..but all i know is that its dammmn creepy to hear someone say...arrrreeeee EYETTEEEM :) add a GIRRRUL to it..and its really ewwwww..
glad u like the blog..and i repeat..thanks for dropping in!! :) WC viewing is going on just terrific.. saw all the games today..and they were all good.. i root for the czechs. they pooped the US 3-0... aussie game was too good too.. and then watched the italy game with an italian..learnt some choice italian swear words :) good experience..
now that is wat u shud be posting - choice italian words!!! :D and anytime dude....
Havent read TOI in ages, precisely for reasons you highlighted. Looks like most newspapers just want to cover the "beautiful people", most critical issues don't seem to get any coverage.
I enjoy reading http://indiatogether.com/...won't say it covers everything but it at least attempts to talk about the remaining near billion people who dont fall into the glamorous segment.
Anita
Anurag, I've added your blog to my list. Hope you don't mind my adding it without asking.
@didi- hmm..will look it up... and i agree totally with u.. all glam..nothing abt actual stuff!!
@jas- I DO MIND... WHO DO U THINK U ARE??
haha..thanks.. will return the favor.. need to add ur frd too!! :)
@ I DO MIND... WHO DO U THINK U ARE??
I like it! :)
