a calm day!!
now that the thesis is done and over with... finally had one day to myself... dont remember the last time when i woke up at 11 am..rolled and rolled in bed... till i suffered from severe back spasmites.. owing to unbelievable stretching... felt like hobbes today :)... and then watched a footer game...lying in bed... and a good game at that too...arsenal (my fave club by the way :D) beat the living daylights out of juve... 2-0..but it could have been 6-0 and still would been a reasonable scoreline ( and for once i am not exaggerating)... ate a bit....read a novel (thats one thing i havent done in 6 freaking months... so felt terrific..the life of pi its called..and a pretty interesting book it is too)... played a bit...and rolled around some more...
tomorrow reality hits again...got to clear a course still....and needs some effort too..:D..but that is part of the boring routine!!!
all this aside... i have had an interesting three months in 2006...no this is not some quarterly report... i just wanted to talk abt my first resolution that has lasted this long...and is going to last a long time after this too...on the 1st of jan 2006..i quit coke and coke products..and pepsi and pepsi products too... i decided to do it as my silent protest against the exploitation that these companies are carrying out on poor rural indian dwellers and am sure of many other countries!! (and FYI... i was an avid coke drinker...why?? no reason at all... just guzzled it like teh americans guzzle beer..had 1litre of coke a day...atleast.. and that was the norm for pretty much the god part of 2 years here in the us..and 1/5 of a huge bag of lays a day....that was me.. so what i write below..has not been easy for me to do ...not at all..which makes it all the more gratifying that i am actually fighting for the cause!!..not that i should make a fuss out of it..but i believe that i have led a selfish..greedy life..and this is one of the few slightly silverish spots..that i can be proud of..and can actually share with all those who read this blog!!)
well anyway..i thought..ok..no soft drinks..big shit... i can live without those... saves my enamel and saves me a few extra pounds me thought... then realized... hmm..no bottled water either..most found ard here are either owned by pepsi or by coke and no freaking LAYs (not that lay u pervs :D :D..or was it just me )... realized i had to make more trips to the indian grocery store to lay my hands on murukkus..and maamis banana chips.. they are yummier anyday..
and then i realised...hmmm.. no more powerades and gatorades....i always thght gatorade was owned by ESPN..dont ask me why..i just thght so... but no..its a PEPSI co product... and no tropicana or minute maid of course.... set my sights on Dole juices..the name sounded so corny that i thought it had to be a local brand.. NOO..i was sooo wrong.. that was part of Pepsi Co. too.. have since deteriorated to Motts apple juice :D and red bull... yuck it is..but still something to keep me going....
i have since realized that most of the chains of restaurants i visited.. a la pizza hut... and the great Taco "h"ell :D (picked the calling bell as hell from a good friend... who does not read this blog am sure.. but ill credit the person with it..in case they do drop in by mistake) all had links with one or the other cola companies!!! so cut them all out of the system!!! taco hell really recently..but yes ...its out of my system... :)
saw a zillion other brands under these two companies... no bacardi for me!! no evian water (not that i drink evian..but thought itd be cool to add evian here.. DIG THIS: EVIAN WATER IS MORE EXPENSIVE THAN PETROL IN INDIA... How crappy can it get??? what mother nature took millions of years to produce..and what we use...after some umpteen highly expensive and polluting procedures.. is cheaper than some bottled water... CRAP!!! capitalist SOBs... out to make profits... and we fools allow them to exorbitant costs).. even the cuppax Dr. Pepper is owned by Coca-Cola... i drank oddwala juices for a while..pretty yummy... but u know the routine by now.. who?? ok coca cola !!!
and, oh yeah!! you got to read the catch line for coca cola..to understand the irony!!! (make sure u dont miss the intro... for the sarcastic irony!!#!@#@#@) see here
i was then reminded of something someone told me... coke is all pervading.. its the most popular brand in the world... and coke is the most common word in all languages after "love" .. yuck what a contrast in the two words!! ( not that love is pure anymore..ppl seem to randomly use it.. " i love her ass"... " i love his purrrfume" crap... lust is more the word to use there :D,, infact love can be replaced by many simpler synonymns..in most "fuck"ing cases!!! :D :D )..
anyway before i digress.. i have stopped drinking most softdrinks...infact all liquids that dont have starbucks or redbull stamped on them .. everything else i am sure is a coke/pepsi partnered product.. and oh yes....how can i forget!!! coke pays my school.. loads of money.. so that it can monopolize the student market...!!!!!" i have stopped eating on campus too for fear that the chains have some link or the other with coke..after all ..the beverages they serve are only coke..... damn it...its my battle..and its getting tougher by the day.... BUT... but.. but...
it is possible to survive... its possible after all!!!..even by the rules that i have set for myself.. and inspite of the all pervasiveness of coke and pepsi!!!! eat home cooked food.. fill up bottle of water..on the way to lab.. drink that..or drink water from the dirty fountain there..!!!... drop into starbucks... (interesting case history there)....eat in some local business restaurants... drink some redbull... to keep in touch with the commercial world.. ( am pretty sure that red bull is screwing the eco system in some other country...so will gradually avoid that too.. and for that matter starbucks too... but for now..i need some commercial shit in my system..why?? cos sudden avoidance is difficult.... ask any jilted lover... :D..it takes time..time is a good healer.. eventually ill get them out too..and turn to water... and fresh fruit.. and juice that i make myself... on a small scale... ).skip a few meals if nothing else is possible!! but ill live!!!
and I LIKE TO KEEP IT THIS WAY !!! but..am i making a difference??? i hope i am..and as they say...its droplets of water that fill a huge jug....and did i say silent protest.. i dont want it to be siltent anymore...i want more people to join in this war against greedy corporations that make huge profits... no matter how high the price... "a few million people going waterless is ok... is too small a price" they say.. "oh yeah baby...kill them all... who cares" they say..
